incidentally, I am working on a binary build for MacOS also. If you'd like to give that a try use:

https://github.com/jay0lee/GAM/releases/download/v3.71/gam-3.71-macos.tar.xz

this build should not require you to install Python or call Python. Just decompress the archive, change into the directory and run gam:

tar xvvf gam-3.71-macos.tar.xz

./gam version
